Friday, November 28th, Devin and Autumn came and got us around 10:30 am for an ATV trip to the abandoned mine and ghost town.
| Our first view of the town. |
| Getting closer. |
| The stream that runs through the town and the houses on its banks. |
| The stream in the other direction. |
| An old rusted swing without seats. |
| We walked thought the old mess-hall (the brown building on the left). There is a huge, old, rusted, wood cook stove; a gigantic Hobart mixer, coffee pots, cases of unopened fruit cocktail, etc. throughout the building. Most of the buildings are boarded up, but there are some that can be walked through. |
After exploring the ghost town, we rode over to the old dredge. Most of the pond it sat in is filled in, so it was easy to explore it. There was new plastic piping inside, so parts of its machinery was being used for more modern endeavors. The kids enjoyed exploring it.
| As you can see, it is buried in gravel, with very little water around it. |
| The kids climbed to the top of it. This reminds me of the huge spruce tree that was at Birch Lake. There was a natural arm chair near the top. I use to climb up there and site. The view of the lake was very similar, with large thinks looking very small. |
| Cody at the top. |
| Cody sitting on the buckets. They went down into the water and gravel beneath. |
| That's me down below. |
| Renee and Devin almost at the very top. Autumn is at the top taking their picture. |
| Renee half-way up. |
| Just a few more steps and she would be there. |
| Autumn and Renee at the top. |
| Autumn, Devin, and Renee at the top. |
We then headed back home, as black clouds were just beginning to show south of us.
| The band of explorers. Autumn, Devin, Renee, Me, and Cody. |
We're almost home. The left peak is right on the northern shore of Goodnews Bay. Planes, coming from BET, have to fly around it to get to GNU.
I really appreciated Autumn and Devin being our guides. On the way home, Devin went ptarmigan hunting. He allowed Cody to use his rifle and to got two. Devin then showed him how to clean them and we had them for dinner that night. This was a very eventful day for my children.
