My new cook started Monday. Hopefully, this one will show up every day, which for this first week has shown to be true. She is also doing a great job.
Monday, our secondary teacher, Jessica Goldsmith, arrived on the last plane of the day. The students are still getting used to her, but all is going well. I spent most of last week creating class schedules for middle and high school. Brad Graeter showed up Wednesday and changed a lot of classes. Thankfully only the morning classes were affected. Our VTC (video teleconference) classes drive the rest of the classes. I can't tell you how hard it was to get everything to mesh together. It got done and I did a great job. :) (pat-on-the-back)
Cindy Dreher, our instructional coach, and Andrea Engbretson, Cindy's boss and my evaluator, also arrived on Wednesday. Brad got his work done and split for Goodnews (GNU). I gave Andrea the extra bed in my house. They spent two days with us and were here Thursday when OCS and the state troopers arrived to remove all of the Tugatuk children to Bethel (BET). I couldn't let anyone know what was happening because he wanted all the children in school or at home. Plus, he didn't want to upset them before things happened.
Thursday, Andrea to the afternoon flight back to BET. Cindy decided to go with the school (staff and students) over to GNU via boat, a new adventure. Frank James has a 27-foot boat that could take all of us. He also has a 200 hp motor. I've been told it take 45 minutes to make the trip across the bay. It took him about 15 minutes. We were just past high tide, so he could just shoot straight across. When we came home at low tide, he had to follow the deep, narrow channel which goes around the north side of the bay and it took him longer. I couldn't get hold of the school right away, the line was busy. The boys decided to walk and then the elementary kids, with Autumn as a chaperone, decided to walk also. A group in a truck offered Jessica and I a ride. Freida and Jocelyn joined us. Cindy insists on waiting for the school van. About halfway there, the van comes along, it picks up Cindy and the elementary students. I love how thinks can be so disorganized yet everything works out. You just have to go-with-the-flow out here.
The food was great. The locals danced and then each group of students danced. When they were all done it was 8 pm and time to go home. I put $100 into Frank's bank account to cover gas and his generosity in taking us all to the Messenger Feast.
Daniel Adams had given me two ducks. Saturday night I roasted them and invited Jessica and Autumn over for dinner and a movie (12 Years a Slave). It has been a hectic but very good week.
